II. Agenda Topics

  1. Principal's Report (highlights)
    1. Student Vision - focused on student empowerment
    2. STEM Updates
      1. School wide science fair - tentative date Jan 17th, 2019 using Engineering Design Process (EDP) - opportunity to patent afterwards
    3. PE teacher will be doing a club before school (tentatively Tues-Thurs)
    4. Robotics program will be a feeder program for later leagues (high school, etc.)
    5. Mindfulness Club (question): is Buddy Bench part of Mindfulness club program?
      1. Not directly - all classes are trained to understand its use for when someone sits there (they are looking for a friend)
    6. Student Council President Mika Goodness in attendance (recognized)
    7. A representative from student council will be present at each of the four committee meetings moving forward:
      1. Student-Teacher Relationships
      2. Philosophy 4 Children
      3. Problem Solving
      4. Student Service / Student Agency (IB community action)
    8. Library Tree Mural: artist has been thanked via card and gift certificate - has expressed that she enjoys student interaction
    9. Thank you to Fran Alarie for building K Garden - working on one for 2nd grade
    10. Student count is near 550, which is close to projection of 554
      1. Class sizes kept to around 20
    11. Reminder to follow @HahaioneES on Twitter - getting Instagram and Facebook accounts up and running soon
    12. Facilities Questions:
      1. Do many elementary schools have gymnasiums? Not many: Kapalama and Noelani come to mind. Would require a capital improvement project.
      2. Does the turnaround area by the rock wall belong to Parks & Rec? Yes - though we have permit to use it.

  2. Treasurer's Report (budget)
    1. We're in the middle of donation and membership mailers
    2. Only expense of substance thus far is teacher stipend to offset personal supply expenses
    3. Donations have been strong, but lagging behind in membership
      1. Large donation was received at orientation night from a parent who would like to remain anonymous
  3. Hahaione PTSA Website & New Online Store (Yoko Uyehara)
    1. URL is www.hahaione.org
    2. Site was created at no cost using Google Sites
    3. Can subscribe to PTSA mailing list
    4. "Contact PTSA" link provides a feedback form
    5. There are also feeds to events calendar, blog, and Facebook page
      1. Question/Action: determine if parents can share content directly to FB page
    6. T-shirts can be ordered and donations submitted through this site
      1. Fulfillment via PayPal, including credit card transactions
      2. Donations through the website include a "print a donation receipt" function
      3. PayPal cost is 2.2% + $.30 per transaction
      4. Offline forms are also available for purchases outside of website
    7. Volunteer (Blue T-Shirt): Jen Tigley will handle logistics for ongoing orders
    8. Volunteer (Fun Run T-Shirts): Cindy Kajiwara will help with spreadsheet
  4. Fun Run (Angela Bond)
    1. Fun Run is our biggest fundraising event, set for Wednesday Sept. 26th
    2. Jamba Juice will be present
    3. It's a set donation (not per lap) and there will be prizes for donations raised
    4. Kick-off assembly will be on August 22nd with all the paperwork and information released via the Thursday envelope on August 23rd
    5. T-Shirts will be color unique to grade level and custom to class
      1. While paper forms will be available for ordering these, we will be promoting use of the online form to help with ordering logistics
    6. Need parent volunteers to help with organizing pre-logistics and also on day of the event - look out for emails requesting volunteers
  5. Other Business
    1. Fran Alarie is proposing an Air Conditioning solution for the Staff Office
      1. A large split-system would be cost prohibitive due to electrical retrofit
      2. Fran has done research on a Home Depot mobile consumer solution at a cost of $559 each (can leverage military discount from some parents)
      3. Risks and concerns: noise level and escape of cold air due to open doors
        1. Mitigation: propose trial of 1 unit to determine suitability
      4. Decision: unanimously voted to purchase a trial unit
    2. Jeff from the church that offers service on Sunday in attendance
      1. All are welcome and the church is here to help with any PTSA functions and projects
    3. Ohana Night will be moved to September 14th to ensure it does not conflict with Niu Valley Fam Jam
      1. Action (Courtney): contact Enrichment Groups to find out if any/all of them want to host activities on Ohana Night

III. Next Meeting & Adjournment

  1. General call for volunteers as there will be many opportunities to help. Please participate as can, even if you cannot lead an activity. Many hands make light work!
